Costume designer Irene Sharaff is well known for her beautiful work in films such as West Side Story, Cleopatra, Meet Me in St.Louis, and many others.  She worked in both film and theatre, and in 1952 she won the Tony Award for best costume design for Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s The King and I. In 1956 she went on to design the costumes for 20th Century Fox’s film version of The King and I, which also won Sharaff the Academy Award for best costume design.

This lovely striped dress was first worn on Deborah Kerr as Anna Leonowens in 1956 in The King and I. The 1972 television show entitled Anna and the King tried to utilize original costumes from The King and I when possible, and Kerr’s striped gown appeared again on Samatha Eggar as Anna Leonowens. The dress appears mostly unchanged aside from the bow around the collar.

DO NOT get me started!!!!

So, I am taking my family out to dinner because my, and another family member's birthday, are coinciding, and both are pretty major milestones.

Because it's a special occasion, I've chosen a favorite Boston landmark, the Marliave, one of Boston's oldest and also four star dining experiences  There in seems to lies the rub..  Since choosing the restaurant I've been  accosted with emails and phone calls dripping with fear.

"They have valet parking.  that's too much of a hassle."
"We don't like French food"
and my particular favorite:
"We are simple people with simple tastes."

All this from  folk who've lived, worked and dined in Boston and environs all their lives.  What is going on here? Has the whole world suddenly regressed to serfdom????

Slavic mythology: (plural: rusalki or rusalky) a female ghost, water nymph, succubus, or mermaid-like demon that dwelt in a waterway. According to most traditions, the rusalki were fish-women, who lived at the bottom of rivers. In the middle of the night, they would walk out to the bank and dance in meadows. If they saw handsome men, they would fascinate them with songs and dancing, mesmerise them, then lead them away to the river floor to their death.
