Robert Frost's "Stopping By Woods On a Snowy Evening" was published on this day in 1923 in The New Republic magazine, some months prior to its inclusion in his 1923 Pulitzer-winning collection, New Hampshire. The poem was written the previous June, but the experience upon which it is based, according to some accounts, came seventeen years earlier: a trip to town from the Derry, New Hampshire farm in 1905, the impoverished Frost looking to sell enough eggs to buy some Christmas presents.
