Roman Sarcophagus, Hearst’s Castle, 1960s. Bruce Thomas.

I still want to visit Hearst Castle

The castle is quite worth a look-see. The seting is gorgeous, the architecture interesting and the vast amount of incredible crap just sitting around (lampshades made out of illuminated manuscripts. Not copies.) is both impressive and sort of hilarious.

I really need to get there. The fact that there is, as Mr. P. Points out, all that damn staff is reason enough. But then you get to add in the allure of imagining the Talmadge sisters and Ramon Novarro and mother-effing Louise Brooks among others running (discreetly, at least when WRH is around) amok under the encouraging gaze of Marion Davies (who's never looked lovelier), sometimes in the presence of people like G.B. Shaw or random Balkan royalty. Heaven.

I know! I find the Hollywood history as alluring as the vastness of the collection.
