The Ivanhoe dinner theater at 3000 North Clark Street in Chicago. As I quickly scanned through my facebook feed this photo caught my eye immediately–because I knew this place from somewhere.
The photo was a member submission to the Forgotten Chicago group, so I checked its location and it was indeed a mere 5 or 6 blocks north of my grandmother’s apartment. The building’s castle style and the suit of armor above the door undoubtedly made an impression on my prepubescent consciousness, although I had totally forgotten about the place since then.
The photo was dated as “1950s” and the Ivanhoe itself closed in the mid-1970s, although the building survives today as the somewhat less dignified Binny’s Beverage Depot (photo below from Google Maps, September 2016.)
